WoW Forever Skyborne Race Guide: All Abilities + Best Class Picks

The Skyborne are the headline addition to World of Warcraft: Forever, and the only way to play one is to pre-order one of the paid editions covered in our Beta Access Guide. This guide breaks down everything Blizzard has confirmed about the race, including the racial ability differences between Alliance and Horde variants, which classes you can actually pick, and which Skyborne class combo is worth your first character slot in the beta.

Quick answer: Alliance Skyborne Mage is the smoothest pick for PvE-first players (food/water utility + strong AoE scaling). Horde Skyborne Shaman has the deeper toolkit for PvP and hybrid theorycrafting. Both factions share Warrior / Hunter / Rogue / Druid, with Druid getting unique Skyborne forms. Skip Skyborne entirely if you want to play Paladin — that combo doesn’t exist for this race.

Who are the Skyborne?

The Skyborne are elves descended from Highborne exiles who made a pact with the elemental wind spirits of Skywall generations ago. Their home is Zephras Isle, a floating island built specifically as their starting zone. The architecture is striking — wooden docks, chains anchoring stone spires, and ships hanging in the mist. Anyone who’s played through Wrath of the Dragonblight era will see the visual references immediately.

By the time Forever begins, the elemental spirits have faded. The Skyborne are split on what comes next, and that split is what determines your faction at character creation:

  • High Order (Alliance Skyborne) — Pursued the arcane traditions of their ancestors. They get Mage access and a Regeneration racial.
  • Windshaper (Horde Skyborne) — Leaned into elemental traditions through the Earthen Ring. They get Shaman access and a Movement racial.

This isn’t a “neutral race you can swap factions on later” mechanic. The faction choice is locked at character creation and determines your class options.

What’s the Skyborne starting experience?

Every Skyborne starts at level 1 on Zephras Isle and levels through 12 in that zone before joining the main continent. The starting experience is a self-contained tutorial-style run that introduces Skyborne lore, the elemental wind spirit backstory, and the faction choice that will define your character.

If you’ve already read our Beta Access Guide, you know the beta caps at level 30 — so you can complete Zephras Isle (1-12) and still have meaningful content to play through after. You’ll also have time to test racial abilities on the open world before deciding whether to invest in more characters.

All Skyborne racial abilities

Every Skyborne gets four racial abilities — two active and two passive. Three of those abilities are shared across both factions. The fourth varies based on whether you picked Alliance or Horde.

Shared abilities (both factions)

Ability Type Effect
Walk on Air Active Glide downward through the air for 10 seconds. Not flying — controlled descent only. Useful for cliff navigation and avoiding fall damage.
Wind Blessed Passive 1% increased melee, ranged, and spellcasting Haste. Universally useful — every class benefits.
Elemental Insight Passive 5% increased damage against Elementals. Situational but meaningful in some endgame fights.

The shared kit is broadly useful without being class-locking. Wind Blessed is the standout — 1% Haste across the board is a competitive racial compared to most other Vanilla races. Elemental Insight is the weakest of the three in open-world play but becomes a tuning lever for raid designers.

Alliance (High Order) only

Ability Type Effect
Read Ley Line Active Gain 100% increased Health and Mana regeneration for 15 seconds. Between-encounter recovery, not a combat cooldown.

Read Ley Line is the strongest “between pulls” racial in the game for mana-based classes. Mage and Druid benefit most directly, but the Health component keeps it relevant for physical classes too. It’s a high-value racial for leveling speed and dungeon running — you pop it before the next pack and arrive at full resources.

Horde (Windshaper) only

Ability Type Effect
Skysight Active Gain 10% increased movement speed for 10 seconds. Out-of-comcast utility — useful for travel, leveling, and repositioning.

Skysight is weaker in raw combat value than Read Ley Line but has broader use cases. 10% movement speed for 10 seconds on a short cooldown is excellent for world traversal and PvP positioning. It’s the kind of racial that feels weak on paper and overpowered in practice when you actually use it.

Which faction’s racial is better?

Use case Better faction Why
Solo leveling Alliance (Read Ley Line) Faster recovery between pulls
Dungeon running Alliance (Read Ley Line) Resource sustain during trash
PvP Horde (Skysight) Mobility wins fights
Open-world exploration Horde (Skysight) Faster traversal
Raid DPS parsing Roughly equal Wind Blessed dominates either way

If you mostly PvE solo or run dungeons, Alliance is the better racial. If you PvP or play the open world a lot, Horde is the better racial. The class-locking at character creation is the bigger decision — the racial is the secondary tiebreaker.

Skyborne classes by faction

This is the part that catches a lot of players off guard. Skyborne don’t have access to every class. The class list is smaller than other races, and it’s split between factions.

Class Alliance Skyborne Horde Skyborne Notes
Warrior ✅ ✅ Standard melee
Hunter ✅ ✅ Pet class with mobility
Rogue ✅ ✅ Stealth + melee
Druid ✅ ✅ Unique Skyborne forms
Mage ✅ ❌ Alliance-only
Shaman ❌ ✅ Horde-only
Paladin ❌ ❌ Not available
Priest ❌ ❌ Not available
Warlock ❌ ❌ Not available

The biggest gap is no Priest or Warlock. Forever’s design philosophy favors melee and hybrid classes for Skyborne, which fits the lore of a wind-and-elemental-themed race. If you want to play a cloth-wearing caster, Mage is your only Skyborne option.

What about Druid forms?

Blizzard confirmed that Skyborne Druids get unique forms for Bear, Cat, Travel, and Moonkin. These are visually distinct from other races — expect more flowing, ethereal aesthetics fitting the elemental wind theme. This is a meaningful cosmetic advantage for Druid players who care about appearance.

If you’ve been wanting a “pretty Druid” race, Skyborne is now in the conversation alongside Night Elf and Tauren.

Best Skyborne class picks

Here are the recommendations for each type of player, based on the racial kit and class synergies available at launch.

For PvE leveling (casual players)

Pick: Alliance Skyborne Mage

Mage is the strongest solo-leveling class in Vanilla content, and Read Ley Line makes it even stronger. You have food/water utility for the group, strong AoE scaling, and the most reliable escape tools. Skyborne Mage has the lowest friction path from 1 to 60.

Runner-up: Horde Skyborne Shaman if you prefer melee/ranged hybrid play. Skysight helps with travel, and Shaman has off-healing for dungeon groups.

For PvP players

Pick: Horde Skyborne Shaman

Skysight’s 10% movement speed is huge in PvP. Combined with Shaman’s toolkit (Earthbind Totem, Tremor, Hex-style utility in some iterations, Windfury procs in PvP), you have a kit that scales well into both duels and battlegrounds. Wind Blessed’s 1% Haste also benefits Shaman’s spellcasting damage.

Runner-up: Alliance Skyborne Rogue for the assassination/lockpick crowd. Mage is too fragile for sustained PvP without group support.

For theorycrafters

Pick: Alliance Skyborne Mage

Mage has the deepest theorycrafting tree at launch because of the new Talent system and the racial interaction with Read Ley Line. If you want to push parses, theorycraft optimal rotation, or write guides, Mage gives you the most to work with.

Elemental Insight’s 5% damage bonus against Elementals is also a tuning knob — when raids have elemental bosses, this racial matters more than usual.

For Druid enthusiasts

Pick: Either faction, Skyborne Druid

If you want to play Druid for the unique Skyborne forms, faction doesn’t matter — Druid is available to both. Pick based on your preferred racial:

  • Read Ley Line (Alliance) for resource sustain in dungeons
  • Skysight (Horde) for mobility in the open world

For “I just want to try the race”

Pick: Alliance Skyborne Warrior

Warrior is the simplest class to learn and the easiest to gear up. Alliance gets the better racial for leveling, Warrior has the lowest mechanical complexity, and you can always respec or reroll later.

Skyborne vs the original Vanilla races

How does Skyborne compare to the established races? Here’s a quick competitive analysis.

Aspect Skyborne Most other races
Haste racial 1% (all forms) 0-1%, often class-specific
Mobility racial Skysight (Horde only) None on most races
Sustain racial Read Ley Line (Alliance only) Cannibalize (Undead), others weaker
Class options 5-6 classes 7-9 classes
Starting zone Custom 1-12 (Zephras Isle) Same as Vanilla
Visual customization High (new race) Standard
Lore novelty High (new faction) Established

Skyborne wins on novelty, sustain, and aesthetic customization. Other races win on class breadth — if you want Priest, Warlock, or Paladin, you need to pick something other than Skyborne.

For pure competitive parsing, Undead, Orc, and Troll still hold their ground. Skyborne is competitive but not strictly better — it’s a sidegrade with new tradeoffs.

Should you main a Skyborne?

Yes if:

  • You want the new race experience (Zephras Isle starting zone, unique lore)
  • You’re flexible on class and don’t mind missing Priest/Warlock/Paladin
  • You value utility racials (Read Ley Line or Skysight) over raw DPS racials
  • You care about visual customization (new race = new looks)
  • You plan to play the new race-class combos anyway

No if:

  • You have a specific class fantasy locked in (Priest, Paladin, Warlock)
  • You want maximum DPS racials (Orc for Horde melee, Human for Alliance Spirit)
  • You don’t want to pay $30 for the race unlock
  • You prefer established race lore over new content

The middle ground:

Most players will create one Skyborne to experience the new content and have a main from an established race on the side. The Zephras Isle 1-12 experience is genuinely worth playing through once.

Skyborne race unlock — quick recap

You need one of the paid editions to unlock Skyborne at all. Here’s the quick recap from our Beta Access Guide:

Edition Beta access Skyborne unlock Price
Skyborne Heroic Pack ❌ ✅ (launch) $29.99
Skyborne Epic Pack ✅ ✅ (launch) $59.99
Warcraft Forever Collection ✅ ✅ (launch) $79.99

If you want to play Skyborne during the beta, you need the Epic Pack or Collection. If you’re fine waiting until November 4 launch, the Heroic Pack is the cheapest path.

Final verdict

Pick Skyborne if: you want the new race experience and don’t mind the limited class list. Alliance for leveling/dungeon play, Horde for PvP/mobility. Mage (Alliance) or Shaman (Horde) are the strongest picks.

Skip Skyborne if: you have a specific class fantasy, you want maximum racial DPS, or you don’t want to pay for the race unlock. The standard races still hold their own in competitive play.

For most players, the right answer is make one Skyborne for the experience, keep a non-Skyborne main for serious progression. The race is fun and the racials are competitive, but the class lock is real.
