World of Warcraft: Forever is now live worldwide, with Blizzard’s announcement confirming availability as of November 5, 2026. This beginner guide covers Blizzard’s official game, not the WotLK 3.3.5a private-server version discussed in older material on this site. If you are new to WoW, your first objective is getting into the correct client with a character you can comfortably learn.
Your starting checklist: verify your account email, confirm subscription or Game Time, select Forever in Battle.net, and coordinate faction and ruleset with friends. Recommendations marked editorial advice are our suggested learning approach, not additional Blizzard requirements.
Prepare your account and install the correct version
Blizzard’s October 28 new-player starter guide requires an active World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Create or sign into your Battle.net account and verify its email address. Install the Battle.net desktop app, install World of Warcraft, and select the Forever version.
Forever supports Windows and Mac. Check the current system requirements for your computer before making assumptions about performance. This guide does not quote a subscription price, promise a free expansion, or infer regional purchase terms.
Editorial advice: make installation an individual task before a scheduled group session. Account verification and choosing the right version are easier to resolve without everyone waiting in voice chat. If the launcher presents unfamiliar options, check the official starter guide instead of using instructions intended for a different WoW release.
Choose your starting settings before your ruleset
On first login, Forever offers Classic and Enhanced presets before the ruleset choice. These are starting settings, not separate progression modes. Classic uses SD models and a classic screen layout; Enhanced uses HD models and a centralized interface. Their quest guidance, bag, transmog, and movement-binding defaults also differ.
Blizzard recommends Enhanced when you are unsure. You can later change individual settings through Game Menu > Options, although the initial preset screen does not return. Our Classic versus Enhanced guide explains the switches without confusing appearance with character power.
Next, coordinate your ruleset: Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Roleplay PvP. Friends need the same ruleset and faction for grouping, guilds, dungeons, and raids. Editorial advice: do not rush past this conversation because you are eager to reach character creation.
Create a character without relying on old assumptions
Choose a race and class from what the actual creation screen offers. Skyborne require a Heroic Pack or higher digital upgrade, so they are not automatically included merely because you have subscription access. Their faction choice happens during creation; our Skyborne guide explains the confirmed faction-specific class options.
Character names have a first name and secondary name, with the combination unique within the region. You can hide the secondary name through options, but it remains visible in chat. Treat that second component as part of the name rather than an optional nickname.
Each time you create a character, you can choose HD or SD models. That choice changes appearance, not abilities or progression, and can later be changed through Options or the Barbershop. Editorial advice: prioritize a character concept you want to revisit, not an unsupported launch-day power ranking.
Learn six controls before adding complexity
The official starter guidance identifies these useful default keys:
- L: quest log.
- M: map.
- P: spellbook.
- C: character window.
- K: professions.
- Escape: options.
Editorial advice: open each window once before filling your screen with additional tasks. Read one current objective in the quest log, compare it with the map, then look at your available spells. Knowing where information lives makes an unfamiliar instruction less frustrating.
Avoid changing every control immediately. Instead, notice one uncomfortable action and adjust that binding deliberately. If you forget what you changed, return to Options and inspect it rather than repeatedly testing keys during a dangerous encounter. This is a learning method, not a claim about the fastest way to level.
Give your first session a manageable finish
Editorial advice: aim to understand one quest sequence and a small selection of your abilities before planning an entire leveling route. Read objectives, check your surroundings, and stop to review new information when needed. Familiar place names are not proof that old server-specific walkthroughs apply.
Ordinary death allows a corpse run. Using a spirit healer involves durability loss and may cause resurrection sickness. Those ordinary rules should not be extrapolated into future Hardcore rules; Hardcore is planned for after launch without a specified opening date.
Before stopping, record the quest you intend to resume and whether your friends made compatible character choices. For the larger content picture, consult the worldwide launch overview. A successful first session can simply mean you understand your character and know what you want to do next.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need an active subscription?
Yes. Blizzard specifies an active WoW subscription or Game Time. Check your own account and current regional terms rather than relying on a quoted price from an unrelated guide.
Which preset should a beginner select?
Blizzard recommends Enhanced if you are unsure. It is a starting configuration, not a permanent commitment: individual settings remain adjustable in Game Menu > Options after the initial screen disappears.
Can I group with friends on another ruleset?
The starter guidance says friends must share a ruleset and faction to group, join guilds together, and run dungeons or raids. Coordinate those selections before investing time in separate characters.
Should I use a spirit healer after every death?
Ordinary death permits a corpse run, while spirit-healer resurrection has durability loss and may add resurrection sickness. Editorial advice: understand those consequences before choosing convenience, rather than treating the healer as a consequence-free reset.
